Apple begründet den Einstieg in den Markt für faltbare Smartphones mit einem hohen Anspruch an Qualität, Haltbarkeit und Design. In Interviews beschrieben John Ternus und Greg Joswiak außerdem, was sie an bisherigen Geräten anderer Hersteller stört.

John Ternus sagte, Apple habe auf einen Zeitpunkt gewartet, an dem ein Produkt den eigenen Anspruch an Qualität, Haltbarkeit und Design erfüllt. Beim iPhone Duo komme außerdem die Verbindung von Hardware und Software besonders gut zusammen. Apple habe damit die Möglichkeit gehabt, viele Aspekte neu zu denken.

»I think for us, it’s always about when do we feel like we have a product idea that meets our bar for quality and durability, but also for design. What I think is particularly amazing about the Duo is, it’s such a good example of hardware and software coming together to make something really special. It was like a green field of opportunity for us because there was opportunity to rethink so many different things. And I think you see that in the hardware, and you see that in the software, and the design. It all kind of came together and felt like it was the right product.«

Greg Joswiak bewertete die bisherigen faltbaren Smartphones anderer Hersteller kritisch. Was Apple in diesem Markt gesehen habe, sei nicht inspirierend gewesen. Ternus wurde konkreter: Die Displays konkurrierender Geräte wirkten billig. Sie bestünden aus Kunststoffoberflächen, fühlten sich nicht angenehm an und seien wellig oder faltig.

»If you’ve seen what’s been out there, not only is it just kind of cheap-feeling plastic surfaces, they don’t feel good to touch, they’re kind of wavy, wrinkly«.

Apple stellte das iPhone Duo am 9. September als erstes faltbares iPhone vor. Es besitzt ein 7,6 Zoll großes Innendisplay und ein 5,4 Zoll großes Außendisplay. Im Inneren arbeitet der A20-Pro-Chip. Das Gerät besteht aus Titan und ist nach IP68 geschützt.

Im Interview sprach Ternus außerdem über seine erste Woche als Apple-Chef. Er bezeichnete die neue Aufgabe als außergewöhnliches Privileg. Apple sei für ihn seit langer Zeit ein wichtiger Teil seines Lebens. Er freue sich darauf, gemeinsam mit den Teams an den kommenden Produkten zu arbeiten.

»It’s amazing, what an extraordinary privilege, right? The reality is I just, I love this place. It’s in my blood. I’ve been here for half my life. I love the people I work with. I love to be able to build the products that we all build together. And so goosebumps, excitement and yeah, just real, like really, really excited about the future.«
